I’ve been interested in reading Sara Gruen’s books for years. In one of the first interviews I read of hers, she mentioned she wrote the first draft of this novel during NaNoWriMo and it’s now a habit.
While I was off work last month due to a viral infection I felt like I had to read this before the movie was widely released in theaters. This was a great book and I can see why people would want to read it with their book clubs. The story alternates between the past and present lives of Jacob Jankowski. He’s in his last weeks of veterinary school when he receives bad news from home.

The movie has been out for several weeks and I’ve managed to avoid any reviews of it. I’m really quite surprised. 🙂 Reese Witherspoon is older than her character but I think she’ll be able to pull it off. Robert Pattinson I’m not so sure about. Eventually I’ll get around to seeing it to find out.
I really liked this book too. I’ve listened to Riding Lessons and Flying Changes by Gruen and thoroughly enjoyed both of them as well.
I’ve started to pick up this book several times, and just never did, for some reason. Your review is making me want to give it a chance. (Haven’t seen the movie either.)
Funny thing, in college I had a crush on a guy named Jake Jankowski. 🙂
